Iron County ICE Release Path
No current official evidence in the Iron County research establishes a standing ICE detention contract or identifies the county jail as an immigration facility. ICE belongs in the search only when the jail, court, counsel, or another source points to an immigration detainer or federal handoff. That conditional framing prevents a county release from being mislabeled.
A person released by Iron County to ICE has left the Sheriff’s physical custody but may remain detained. The county record should show the release date and time plus the authority or destination in the form maintained. ICE then becomes the receiving system. If the county says only “not held,” ask whether the person went to the community or another custodian.
| Question | Record to check |
|---|---|
| Did Iron County custody end? | Jail release sheet or custody-status history |
| Was the event a transfer? | Jail destination field and receiving-agency confirmation |
| Is the person in ICE custody? | ICE Online Detainee Locator System |
| Why did the criminal case change? | 95B District Court or 41st Circuit Court record |
| Did ICE custody recently end? | ODLS within its stated recent-release coverage, then ICE contact |
Search Iron County ICE Transfers
The ICE Online Detainee Locator System, often called ODLS, provides two public search routes. The identifier route uses an A-number and country of birth. The biographical route uses exact name details plus country of birth. An A-number is the immigration file number. ICE instructs users to add a leading zero when the number has eight digits so the search contains nine digits.
- Confirm that the source event points to immigration custody. Do not use ICE merely because a name vanished from county custody.
- Search with the nine-digit A-number and country of birth when those details are known.
- Otherwise use the exact first and last name, country of birth, and other requested biographical details.
- Check spelling, name order, and identifiers before treating a miss as meaningful.
- When a likely match appears, use the listed custody or facility information and confirm important details through ICE detention contact channels.
ICE says ODLS covers current ICE detainees and people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days. It does not display people under age 18. The limited window means it is a status locator, not a permanent Iron County immigration-release archive.
Read ICE Release Results Carefully
An ICE result is an immigration-custody record. It does not prove the outcome of an Iron County criminal case. Likewise, an Iron County court dismissal or jail release does not prove that ICE custody ended. Each agency answers a separate legal and physical-custody question.
A recent ICE release result supports departure from ICE custody within the locator’s window. It may not explain every condition, court date, or form of federal supervision. Contact ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations when the public entry does not settle the location or event. For an older event beyond ODLS coverage, identify the existing record sought and use the appropriate federal records process or case file.
- A-number
- The immigration file identifier used for the most precise ODLS search.
- Detainer
- A notice or request from another authority that may affect release or cause a handoff.
- Handoff
- Transfer from one custodian to another without community release.
- ODLS
- ICE’s online locator for covered current detainees and a limited recent-release window.
Does an Iron County release date mean freedom? Not when the destination field identifies ICE or another authority. It proves only that the Sheriff’s custody ended at that point.
Request Iron County Transfer Records
Start the documentary trail with the agency that physically held the person. For Iron County Correctional Facility, Sheriff Ryan Boehmke’s office holds the county jail record. Ask for the booking/release sheet or custody-status history. Specify the full legal name, date of birth if known, a narrow booking range, and the related court case number. Ask for the actual date and time county custody ended and the maintained field showing release authority, release type, reason, or transfer destination.
The Iron County FOIA Coordinator is Mary Dalpra, 2 South Sixth Street, Suite 7, Crystal Falls, MI 49920, telephone 906-875-3301, and mdalpra@ironmi.org. The county publishes its FOIA form and procedures online. A written request may be delivered in person, by mail, fax, or email and routed to the coordinator. Email and fax requests are treated as received on the next business day under the published procedures.
Michigan FOIA does not require the county to create a new summary or answer a question. Request existing fields and documents. Electronic delivery can reduce copy work when the county has that ability. The county may charge permitted actual costs and up to ten cents per standard letter or legal sheet, but no fixed total price for an Iron County release record is published.
Under the general Michigan framework, the county responds within five business days by granting, denying, partially granting, or issuing one extension notice for up to ten additional business days. The response period does not promise delivery by the fifth day. If a field is withheld, ask for nonexempt portions and the legal basis for the redaction.
Iron County Court Release Context
Use MiCOURT Case Search to read the state criminal case. The 95B District Court handles misdemeanors, preliminary felony proceedings, and many bond events. The 41st Circuit Court handles felony judgments and circuit matters. A register of actions can show bond changes, dismissal, plea, sentence, jail credit, probation, or commitment to MDOC.
The court record explains legal authority but does not always prove the moment of physical exit or the next custodian. Match a signed release order with the jail’s timestamp. If the destination indicates federal immigration custody, then use ODLS. Iron County Trial Court publishes Monday through Friday hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central Time. The jail’s round-the-clock staffing does not make the court clerk available at all hours.
A custody search should also avoid Iron County, Utah results. Cedar City, Utah, area code 435, and ironsheriff.net are unrelated to Crystal Falls, Michigan. A wrong-state roster can create a false custody story.
Separate Iron County Custody Systems
OTIS is for MDOC prisoners, parolees, qualifying probationers, and recently discharged people. BOP is for federal sentence custody. USMS handles many federal pretrial movements. MI-VINE can report participating-agency custody events. None of these systems substitutes for ICE ODLS when immigration custody is the actual question.
MI-VINE may help with the county phase because it can report a release or transfer event supplied by a participating agency. It does not certify the immigration destination and does not replace ODLS. A notification can prompt the next check, while the jail’s release line proves when Iron County custody ended. Keep the alert time separate from the maintained exit time.
The BOP locator has a different federal boundary. It can show a federal inmate as Released or Not in BOP custody with a past release date. If the destination was immigration detention, that status is compatible with continued ICE custody. A search should move from BOP to ODLS only when the record indicates that handoff. The two locators should not be treated as duplicate databases.
An older immigration event can fall outside ODLS’s 60-day released-person window. In that case, save the A-number, exact name forms, countries of birth used, and dates checked. Contact ICE detention information with those identifiers. If a court case governed the immigration detention or release, use that case record as well. Do not turn the lack of a permanent public locator entry into proof that no event occurred.
Identity matching is especially sensitive to exact spelling and name order. Use the A-number when possible. Compare the country of birth and any case identifier. A photograph from a county or state system does not establish that an ICE result belongs to the same person without matching record data.
The order matters. Confirm the county exit. Identify the destination. Search the receiving custodian. Read the court file for legal context. If records conflict, cite the date each was checked and return to the agency that made the physical handoff. The Iron County released-inmates lookup shows the wider classification route.
Note: ICE is a conditional Iron County pathway, not evidence that the county jail is an ICE detention facility.
